go get your bae-rrito

You would think that after like 6 years (phwoar) I'd have figured out how to set up automatic posting properly. But alas, I haven't. I have, however, lived the last week in absolute bliss, thinking this post went up while I was away at camp. All sense of comfort is a lie, it's fine.

A few days ago, Jordan and I randomly had a weekend day off, which never happens, and a new burrito we wanted to eat, which happens fairly often. So we got in the car, and promptly got caught in traffic for three hours. Eventually though, we got to San Francisco and spent a very nice afternoon doing whatever we wanted. That means bubble tea in Chinatown, a late night showing of Wonder Woman, and a supreme burrito from La Taqueria in the Mission District. As I explained to my mother several times ("You're driving all the way there for what??") this burrito is special because...IT DOESN'T HAVE ANY RICE IN IT. For those of you not heavily invested in the burrito trade, this may not seem like a big deal, but it IS. No rice means more meat, more guac, more flavor. It all lived up to the hype.

More importantly, this day was about taking a break to spend time together and not really worry about anything. It's weird but I'm now one of those people whose life gets so busy and hectic that they need to schedule time out to chill and talk about superheroes. If I were going to write a self-help book (we'd all need therapy after that) I'd make ~making time~ the number one tip.

And eating burritos.

sourdough and succulents

photos by Sallie DeYoung and Jordan Schauberger

Sometimes you just gotta pack up your homies into a shiny new Audi and roll out to the city by the bay. We bought baby succulents, sourdough bread, and dim sum. We also took photos of our legs in a Photobooth we were unprepared for, ate said sourdough after it was repeatedly dropped in sand, and stood in line at the succulent festival for a solid two hours with no food. It was a little traumatic.

I think it's important every once in a while to take a trip like this, for no reason other than the sheer enjoyment you get from the people you're with. San Francisco is a really cool city, but what made this day perfect was...well it was Sallie sobbing after Colton dropped her sourdough directly into the sand, to be honest. But also having a day where nothing needed to happen at all, other than the occasional snack break.  That's when the real fun happens.

Pro tip: If you drop bread fluffy side down in sand, it can still be salvaged by ripping that part off and feeding it to your local teenage boy.

march madness

Today, in the name of spring break insanity, Maia, I, and my newly pierced nose (more about that later) got on a 6am bus. This bus, which necessitated both of us waking up earlier than we ever do for school, took us on a very bumpy trip to San Francisco. We had this wild idea that it'd be fun to take a day off and wander, so wander we did. For ten and a half miles.

That's not a typo. According to various step counting bands and apps and whatnot, we managed a whopping 10.5 miles up and down the hills of the city, and that was on only like three cups of coffee. It's truly amazing what the human body can do when motivated by food and shopping possibilities.

We don't live far from SF, so this wasn't a completely one-off experience for us, but it was fun to just explore. Sometimes when you visit a place too much, you forget to take time out and see new parts of it, or just slow down and enjoy them. By foot. In direct sunlight. For nine hours.

So here's what happened:

* A cappuccino at Mario's Bohemian Cigar Store Cafe, where I definitely abandoned Maia to order because I was not cool enough to talk to the barista's.

* A solid ramble round Chinatown, where we picked up lotus cakes and sesame balls at the Eastern Bakery. (10/10 would recommend) We also snagged a couple of those "The City" sweatshirts that are hand-woven by Steph Curry out of the magic he uses to shoot 3-pointers.

* A clam chowder bread bowl at Boudin's bistro because A. I am always ALWAYS hungry, and B. if you come to SF and do not eat Boudin's sourdough at least once, your entire trip was pointless.

* Flower (And clothing. And coffee. And LUSH.) shopping in Union Square, because fresh flowers make everything brighter and also ~aesthetic~.

* A gorgeous sunset out the window of the bus I was on illegally, as technically my return ticket was for the next day. Oops. There was a gorgeous sunrise out that window as well, but I was half asleep and couldn't be bothered to get the camera out.

The best part about the fashion scene in SF is that you will have a very difficult time telling the hipsters from the homeless. The secret is in the conversational topics - if it isn't The Life of Pablo or the possibility of joining someone's friends start-up,

they're not a hipster.

into the fog | san francisco

all photos taken with Fujifilm X30

Here is the great thing about California: you are never very far from the ocean, and the cities that sit along it. I live in the North, where the Pacific gets a little dark, a little wild. If this were Game Of Thrones, it'd be wilding country. There's no place where that is better displayed than in San Francisco and the beaches surrounding it. Even when it's sunny, the fog is juuuust there on the edge waiting to literally roll over you and settle in your bones. When you get to the beaches, there's small pebbles instead of sand and the ocean is not a friendly thing to go play in, but rather a smashing reminder of exactly how small you are. It's my favorite kind of nature.

On Sunday, my family decided to take a day off, pack up, and hit the road to SF. We wandered around Chinatown, picking up lotus cakes from the Eastern Bakery, lucky cats in one of the countless tourist trap stores, and thai tea because I'm an addict. My brother got a mango-fusion-someting, and it was gross, so he wanted it noted that he does not recommend it. Then we went down to Fishermans Wharf where we got absolutely skinned for parking. Honestly, it's a car, not a small country. But the best fish and chips in the bay are down there, so ya gotta do what ya gotta do. We also stopped at the Musée Mécanique, which is basically a massive warehouse crammed full of all the old arcade and carnival machines of your dreams (and nightmares). A 113-year-old fortune telling machine told me I am great but also awful, and so to not be like that, which I appreciated. My dad got to see a warship and was really excited. Once we had been sufficiently abused by the throngs of British tourists (looking at you, dude who caught his GoPro in my hair), we went to the Marin headlands to sit in the freezing wind and wonder why on earth there were dolphins. That's right. I have no photos of this, but there were dolphins. Everyone saw them, so it wasn't something in my boba. I also climbed to the top of a massive rock edge but in every photo I look absolutely terrified in a "this is awesome but I might die" way, so I'm just gonna spare you I think.

In other exciting news: I forgot to take a jacket so I am now the proud owner of a neon pink "SAN FRANCISCO" fleece. I'm not mad about it.
