let's enjoy this
Life is stressful. And sometimes, even if you're doing things you really want to do, you burn out. Your to-do list is terrifying, you don't want to talk to anyone, and staying in bed bingeing on Brooklyn 99 seems like the most reasonable way to pass your day. Or summer. Whatever.
It used to hit me for weeks at a time, and I was really doing things I love. When you're looking for help pulling yourself out of your slump, it seems like every mommy-blogger and "fitspo" model is telling you all you need to do is pray, juice a lot of raw vegetables, and buy a SUV full of Lululemon and your whole existence will turn around. As someone with neither the inclination or the budget to do any of that, I sort of just bumped around and crashed into a lot of self-help books. Then, writing my advice column, I started to get a lot of questions from people on how just be ...better. I'll be honest: I don't always feel qualified to answer this, but I do believe strongly in leaning into your desire to better yourself. I make myself lists all the time, so here's one for you on how to make everything just a lil more joyous:
1. Fix the outside: Look, in the immortal words of my hero Tan France, "You'll feel much better when the outside matches the inside." I love overalls, sparkly makeup, and my wild curly hair, and I embrace that every day with the way that I dress and present myself. My aesthetic is fun, but can get serious really quick. I have a nose ring, and will probably eventually accumulate some tattoos, and that may affect future opportunities. Whatever judgements people may pass on me as a result of the way I look is on them, and while we're both going to have to live with that, it's an easy price for me to pay to unleash my personality. Allow yourself to express the person you are, and you'll feel a lot more confident and comfortable in your day-to-day. It won't always be easy - budgets, judgement, and a host of other outside influences may discourage you. Ultimately, you need to make that call though, because you're the one walking around every day as yourself.
2. Plan it out: I know, I know, this is a worn out soap box, but everyone needs to get their **** together and in order to do that, you need a schedule. Start light - write down when you need to go to work, what time you want to wake up, stuff like that. Then start adding in time for studying, family time, or date nights. Eventually, you'll be down to when you want to do laundry and the dinner reservation you made for your next anniversary. I used to be a MASSIVE procrastinator, because I knew the last minute was always there for me. Now, I like a two week lead on everything. Routine is SUCH a huge component of organizing my life and not only making sure that I stay on top of stuff, but that I know what I'm looking forward to when it gets done. You'll also start to see it in other parts of your life, whether it's what you do before breakfast every day, or how you budget yourself. As you become more naturally organized, you'll start to feel like you have more time - because you will. Go do something fun with it.
3. Build a tribe: I will be the first to admit that I am a serial friend-maker. I am extremely interested in people, and will genuinely encourage you to tell me your entire life story. With that said, I realized about two years ago that while I was launching a lot of relationships, I wasn't cultivating them, and so I was essentially investing my time in dead stock. I had to take a serious look at a lot of my friendships and ask "How are either of us benefitting from this relationship? Do I genuinely enjoy spending time with you?" Too often when spending time with some people I would catch myself spacing out, checking my phone for the 4578238x time, or listening for an opportunity to speak. I became more comfortable with the idea that it wasn't selfish to bow out of those relationships, because neither of us were truly happy. As I began to thin the ranks, some people truly began to shine, and I could truly invest in them. I find myself today with a smaller, but much more solid front line of humans I am delighted to call family.
These three things are the building blocks I've used to improve not just myself, but my life. I still get easily anxious, procrastinate, and find myself tearing through my closet because "nothing looks good", but it's less frequent now. I feel, well, not peaceful per se, because I'm pretty much always over-caffinated and under-slept, but happy. I hope that by sharing this, you get a little piece of that too. If we all do it together, maybe we can take over the entire planet and get rid of all the "juice bars" which are definitely just traps for people who go places solely to take Instagram photos.
Just checking to make sure you were paying attention.

fits like a glove
jacket: vintage
dress: tobi 'joleen' dress
shoes: converse
backpack: sunny dushanka
The older you get, the more and more "short and tight but also fancy" becomes this bizarre expectation forced upon your wardrobe. I've managed to avoid it thus far mainly by never leaving my house. I'm also fairly tall and have all of the curves of a highway in the desert, so finding a dress that fits is also a v difficult undertaking. As you can tell, I have a well articulated excuse for every situation. But I decided it needed to happen, because I am only scared of rational things, like deep water and spiders, and will not be intimidated by a dress. At least not one this small.
You know in a sitcom, where the main character does something they were scared of, and the happy music plays, and they say something along the lines of "that wasn't that bad"? That was me, once I got accustomed to the breeze. This dress is super comfy, and not too much of a ~night out~ look for me to rock on my weekly trip to IKEA.
Speaking of IKEA: settle this for me, guys. Is it "I-KEY-UH" or "E-KAY-UH"?
Loser has to buy me another pillow for my fort,
so I'm heavily invested.

santa cruise
On Thursday, Jordan went off the map and drove us to Santa Cruz on the end of a back-to-school shopping trip to The Great Mall (next post. next post.). If you've never had the pleasure of visiting this strange little place, I'd highly recommend it for a day trip. It's the quintessential beach town - one good street, more seagulls than people, and a lot of tourists - but is also home to UC Santa Cruz, so there's a ridiculous amount of hipster college students everywhere. This one-off combination has led to a place that is home to sock shops, a pizza joint whose shirts are collected around the world, and three all-you-can-eat vegetarian Indian buffets. Jordan says there's more to it than that, but honestly, those are the best bits.
The Boardwalk is the crown jewel though, and for good reason - it's the one of the last places around where you're allowed to get on blatantly unsafe rides. All in the name of the kind of sheer terror that is a cornerstone of incredible fun. You may think I'm joking, but most of those things start shaking suspiciously when someone sneezes too hard. It's great. The whole places is covered in a fine layer of sand as well. Tastes incredible on a hotdog or chili cheese fries, and the lightly sanded Bavarian Almonds are a must. Absolute pinnacle of culinary art.
All jokes aside, the Boardwalk is a cultural icon not because of its creaky boards, or impressive sunsets, or even its typical California beach. It's weathered millions of tourists and gallons of saltwater and remained a place that undeniably feels like summer. The bright, cracking paint, and the top 50 hits piped out of speakers that sound older than the artists performing through them, those are accoutrements of this cotton candy scented time freeze. Even on a cloudy Thursday, at 60 degrees with a cold breeze coming off the Pacific, it felt like the right place to spend the summer with your friends. If you have those.
It was the perfect way to close off what has truly been a whirling and sunburnt summer. But now it's time to pack it in, and pretend that fall has arrived, so that it won't seem so sad to spend the next 16 weeks in a classroom.
Summer '16,
you did good.

baby's got back
shirt: wild blue denim
pants: element eden
shoes: coolway usa
The back on this shirt is a classic case of something looking extremely challenging, and then being extremely challenging. Like how much back is too much back? I still don't know.
I felt like I needed to at least TRY to use it as something other than a glorified dress-topper, and so, in an effort to make the whole thing simpler, decided to combine it with the only harder-to-wear item in my closet: these pants. They're WHITE and FLORAL and CROPPED and CUFFED ON THE BOTTOM. I've had them a solid two years but have always been way too scared of them and the stains I was sure would immediately destroy them if I dared to wear them in public. But as always, the promise of wiggle room and pockets pulled me in.
THIS OUTFIT WAS SO COMFY. I wore it to wander around the market and pretend I could tell the difference between central valley and northern peaches. (psa: central valley are squishier and generally sweeter. I guess.) Unexpected side effect of being fully covered with an open back? Perfect temperature. Even though it was 103 degrees. That's almost...40 degrees celsius for those of you who live in places with seasons.
I'm currently in Humboldt, which is much too far north of the wall for you to worry about locating on a map. It's foggy, and below 70 degrees, which feels faintly unnatural to me. I can already feel myself losing my healthy tan.
Kidding. (a little)

where are they taking you
photos by Jordan Schauberger
shoes: tevas x jhene aiko
HI GUYS wow it's been ten days. That doesn't seem like a long time, but it was long enough for like a thousand people to die on Game of Thrones. I've been out adventuring with my squad, from San Francisco to LA. In the first part, we bought succulents, listed to TLOP, and - well that's all for another post. I'll be writing a lot in the coming weeks - but first, much like gym class, we need to talk about footwear.
This post is about what I wore on my feet, because I'm trying to improve lives here. On this particular outing to SF, I broke in my brand new Teva's in a very serious way. I'd had vague blister-related reservations about wearing new shoes on a day where I'd be walking approx. a million miles up hill, but they're also very ~funky~ and if not San Francisco, where else?
THESE SHOES ARE INCREDIBLE. I don't why I've never gotten pair before. I mean, I do, because velcro, but I'm over that now. Not only are they squishy and comfy, but they're v stylish. I, and more importantly, Jhene Aiko say so, and you can't argue with it. I like to move wildly, and climb things and stand on my tiptoes, and these shoes just let it all happen. In the past, I've shied away from the "pretty ugly" shoe trend because A. it seemed like a lot of work to style and B. I didn't see a huge benefit. After clambering all over California in these, I can distinctly say that the benefit far outweighs the amount of "90's dad on vacation" jokes your friends will make.
I will, however, be concerned if you start sporting these with Tommy Bahama and a fanny pack.

get glow
dress: american eagle
bralette: aerie
You guys know how much I love makeup. You've seen the snapchat hauls and the highlighter swooshes. I had bad cystic acne back in the day (a year ago), and in the process of healing it, taught myself how to sparkle my face to cover what were some truly horrendous scars. (Mad props to Cat, my former LUSH queen, for hiring me/saving my life there.)
But I passionately love my eyeliner. Especially my dramatic blackest-black wingtips that extend further than is probably entirely appropriate for any given situation. It makes me feel ~intense~ and ~fashion~. But during the summer, it also has a tendency to droop more towards the bottom of my eyes by the end of the day, and gives me this rather sad look. It is also very hard to go to a pool party and keep your eyeliner intact. That was the deal breaker. Something had to give.
So, as an experiment, I stopped wearing eyeliner. And then suddenly, stopped contouring. And strobing. And all those other -ing's that take up so much money and space in my makeup bin. Very quickly it went from an experiment in my ~self image~ to an extra thirty minutes in my day and I was like HEY nice. I got used to my face again. Not to say I'm putting away the eyeliner for good, because that would just be nonsense. But I had gotten to the point where I didn't really remember what I looked like without it. (Five years old.)
Also, Aerie? Makers of all things pretty and lace-y? STILL not photoshopping their ads. Just because they're still trying to spread the word: the real you is beautiful. Not saying the you in false lashes and full contour isn't beautiful too, because that version is actual fire, but you don't need it. I know that's a very mom-ish thing to say, but some(most)times, mom is right. I love glossy and no-hipbone having high fashion as much as the next blogger, but I'm not trying to buy a bralette off it, you feel? I think it's hard to go out and let the world see you, but once they do, they're down.
Other things I'm down for: swing dresses. It's too hot to be clingy in any way, but especially with fabric. I don't even care that I got called ""ma'am" today. Much.
BUT I'M 18 OKAY LITTLE GIRL

train of thought: feelin' cozy
hoodie: american eagle
hat: graveboy x emo nite
HI GUYS. I'm currently living out the other half of my double life at county fair, ankle deep in animal poop, bedazzled bootcut jeans, and farm boys. It sounds insane, but it's definitely my comfort zone. I've actually been thinking a lot about what makes me comfortable lately. Not just physically, like this hoodie, which is definitely sown out of fluffy clouds and good wishes, but mentally. *mom voice* I'm at a point in my life where I'm always exploring, and I feel like it's hard to put yourself in new situations, which can be uncomfortable, if you don't know what makes you comfortable in the first place. For me, being at fair surrounded by my 4-H family, animals, and lots of fried food is the perfect ~safe space~ balance to the rest of my life, where I'm constantly trying new things. I guess I'm trying to say that it's okay to have things in your life that don't change, because they're the anchor for all the things that do.
I hope that paragraph still makes sense when my brain is running on more than 5 hours of sleep.
(6 am comes mighty quick when you go to sleep at midnight.)
x Justina
ps. LOOK, A HAT THAT FITS OVER MY HAIR. Never thought we'd see the day.

flip and flow
dress: american eagle
boots: caterpillar
bralette: aerie
It's so HOT. Not just this dress, but the weather. El Nino is a distant memory, and the only proof that it even happened is that our lakes have actual water in them. With that said, the dress is pretty cute too. It's a perfect summer cut - there's not a lot happening, but it easily fits everything you could be doing during the day. Little details like the straps in the back elevate it from a standard school outfit to ~fancy barbeque~ acceptable. I also very much enjoy dancing in it because the skirt is flowy but doesn't do the thing where you have to hold it down so you don't flash someones grandparents. You know what I'm talking about.
Remember when everyone was obsessed with those Chloé stud boots? It seems like it just happened, but that was basically in my sartorial childhood. Literally every blogger and their mother had a pair, and then they just disappeared. These boots remind me a lot of a southwestern interpretation of those, and I love it. I'm equally impressed that they're from Caterpillar - not a traditional maker of hipster boots, but surprisingly proficient at it. They're also incredibly comfortable, and the buckles make a very satisfying clunking noise when I walk.
Today was my last day of classes. I still have finals, but am effectively done with my first full time semester of college. I'm really unclear on where the last 16 weeks of my life went. I've learned about oxford commas, il imperfetto, delayed ledes, yoga breathing, and the very bizarre history of California. (Fitting.) I've also found a strange little family, and a lot of stress, in my (award-winning) college newspaper, and eaten a prolific amount of really good food. Shoutout to Tim for never letting me starve, Jordan for letting me angry write at midnight, and Hannah for copy-editing my life/being a generally angelic sunfish.
It's time for summer though. Some classics will be making a reappearance: Sallie + our annual road trip, camp, and LA. There's also some new stuff in the works.
Like sleep.

take care of yo'self
25 photos of my face that you didn't need in your life
Drake says he'll take care of me, but I'm an independent woman who don't need no man (unless Drake asks, in which case I definitely need him) and I can take care of myself.
It ain't always easy though. Not only is there no time in life to treat myself, sometimes I feel like I'm just patching up cracks when they get too big to ignore. That is no way to stay in the game. If you're gonna keep yourself and your instagram strong, you gotta be living your #blessed life. So I made a list of 25 easy ways to take care of yourself, inspired by this Friday night tweet.
1. Say "I love you" - to a dog, a plant, a human. Sharing love makes you feel good.
2. Wash your face - a really good scrub or even a quick rinse will refresh your life.
3. Drink some water - if you're thirsty, you're dehydrated. If you're not, you're still dehydrated.
4. Coconut oil - on your face, in your hair, on your skin, in your coffee, on your problems.
5. Send a cute text - see no. 1. "Good morning sunshine" is my personal choice.
6. Laugh at something - even if it's yourself.
7. Smile for 30 seconds - there's legit internet science behind this, it makes you happy.
8. Do a BuzzFeed quiz - personal fave.
9. Read your horoscope - they aren't bible, but they are entertaining.
10. Make a list - it doesn't have to be a "to-do", but it will help sort out your day.
11. Daydream about an adventure - then make a change jar for it.
12. Keep your nails correct - chipped nails only seem like no big deal until they're fresh painted.
13. Do your hair - 30 extra seconds can take an actual bed bun to a cute messy bun.
14. Learn about the world - listen to NPR or This American Life on the way to wherever.
15. Listen to music - a good song can change your mood. Just ask Drake.
16. Get dressed - pajamas seem like a great idea, but real clothes are good too.
17. Make plans - not just with people, but with yourself. Go to a museum. Read a book.
18. Read something - whether it's Tolstoy or Elite Daily, read some real words.
19. Spend time - take five minutes for whatever your hobby is and do it.
20. Stretch - do some quick yoga or just reach for the ceiling, give your bones some room.
21. Enjoy your food - pay attention to how it tastes, and how it makes you feel. Eat meaningfully.
22. Clean out - I promise you that you don't need 3/4ths of what's at the bottom of your purse.
23. Dance - just one song. Get yourself out of the corner.
24. Do your work - you never have as much time as you think you do.
25. Do something you enjoy - something that really makes everything else worth it.
My life gets crazy easily, and I'm pretty prolific at procrastinating. If I don't start, I'll stagnate, and nothing gets done. I'll slip on one thing, then another, then suddenly it's Monday and I have no coffee, no homework, and the same outfit as yesterday.
And hey, I've already got #10 sorted for today.

you, me, NPR?
prom 2014
Justina rule #46: When NPR calls, you get your butt in a studio and pick up the phone.
Here are some things I thought about while recording for NPR:
- I should drink more water. my entire life is very dehydrated.
- I wonder if Ira Glass listens to Weekend Edition?
- Oh my god Ira Glass might hear my voice
- Thaaaat's going to damage my chances of ever getting on This American Life.
- Prom was fun. Why aren't there adult proms?
- AM I AN ADULT?
- I do listen to NPR.
- OH IT'S RINGING
- The fabric my prom dress is made of is probably illegal now.

If I'd have known you were going to be here // TEEN CHOICE AWARDS 2014
(for best quality watch in 720hd)
dress + dr. martens: c.o asos
I WENT TO THE TEEN CHOICE AWARDS.
IT WAS GREAT.
I don't know how to properly sum it up other than that.
I had such a fantastic time getting to see some old friends, make some new ones,
and bear witness to the extremely strong eyebrow game that was happening.
(see: Charlie Rowe + Willow Shields)
I talked about glow bowling with The Band Perry,
fangirled over Hailee Steinfeld with Laura Marano,
oh and HUGGED JOSH HUTCHERSON
but no big deal not at all
I took some amazing selfies (as promised)
and then some even better ones.
see my video for those ha ha wink wink
I even eyebrow wiggled with Tyler Posey,
and let me tell you,
that is a life experience everyone should have.
And I realized that I was doing life right,
when Alli Simpson came over to me and said:
"If I'd have known you were going to be here,
I would have worn my overalls."

I may not go to school,
but I know a thing or two about what to wear once it's over.
Football games, parties, the occasional mass mud fight...
wait, does your school not do that?
Never mind
The point is,
out of uniform doesn't need to mean Uggs and sweatpants.
In fact, no situation ever should mean Uggs.
So make like Selena Gomez and shake it up a bit.
Okay that was bad.
In my defense,
I'm packing and writing this blog post at the same time.
LA,
I'm coming for ya.
I know I said this last time,
but make sure you're following me on allllll of the platforms (including huffpost teen)
to witness what will definitely probably maybe
be the most epic livetweeting you've ever seen.
And lots of photos of palm trees,
which we both know is definitely more exciting than red carpet selfies.

july playlist // drown out the fireworks
"Justina, it's the 28th. Might be time to do the monthly playlist."
I'm sorry that it took so long but you know what
you guys sent in a LOT of suggestions,
and I have only two ears,
and as I now know,
using each of those ears individually can't be pulled off.
Plus, how am I meant to know if I'm properly obsessed with a song
unless I listen to it until I've memorized every lyric?
Exactly.
But I think this one was worth the wait.
We have my favorite AJR song, hands down, AfterHours. Their lyrics blow my mind sometimes. Listen, dance, and understand.
KONGOS + Kalin and Myles are straight up dance jams.
I recently got Hulu+,
and so like any sane person,
decided to watch 5 seasons of Community in a week.
That's how I met Troy Barnes aka Donald Glover
aka Childish Gambino when he's shopping with his mum.
It was a bit like seeing a Kardashian in Walmart:
unexpected and brilliantly hilarious.
I of course had to include one of my favorites off his first album Camp.
Next themesong of "Troy and Abed in the Morning"?
Last but not least in any sense are my favorite blonde siblings.
Last week,
R5 dropped an EP, Heart Made Up On You,
with 4 songs that will make up a big chunk of your future playlists.
"Things are Looking Up" is a sunshiney number
that brings an American Authors vibe without being too skip-a-long.
So there you have it,
the sounds of July.
Now just overlay the noise of fireworks
and people swearing when the aformentioned fireworks land on their foot,
and you're all set.
Huzzah

This is one of my breeziest summer outfits.
This dress has been a staple for me since I got it last September.
It's super easy to dress up or down.
I've taken to wearing it with either these heels or my Converse high tops,
depending on the amount of running that is happening.
ideally none, unless something is drastically wrong
I'm also slowly getting used to carrying around less jun-
er, very important possessions,
to accommodate for how small my satchel is.
Today's particular outfit was just for a day of rambling about eating ramen and taking photos.

Speaking of: I have officially taken 200 polaroid photos.
yes I've been counting but so would you if you'd carried this camera around
Its so insane to me to look at my walls and see 200 little memories all perfectly preserved.

striped life // boots are best
You know when you are doing something,
then realize that you were meant to be somewhere ten minutes ago,
and so you just snatch whatever's nearest and hope you have enough
je ne sais quoi to pull off the disaster it is sure to be?
That's what happened here.
And guess what?
It works.
Mainly because my new boots from Kling are the coolest.
There's no way for them to not look extremely rad.
Paired with a simple dress and some matching accessories,
itty bitty teeny tiny pepaloves satchel you are so cute
they put the whole outfit on another level.
Much like my hair,
which adds an extra three.

ah, prom.
What a wonderful night.
You recreate Charlies Angels poses with all of your girlfriends.
(minus one, who is across a rather large pond)
You get to eat hamburgers + french fries,
and make faces out the drive thru window
at your favorite eating establishment.
You go watch a movie that involves Don Draper, India,
and a rather unlikely plotline.
You fit six people in a photo booth,
then decide polaroids are better anyways.
You discover that when it comes to air hockey,
your tiniest friend is much more ferocious than her size and demeanor had led you to believe.
You defend your title as reigning Dance Dance Revolution queen in very high heels.
..and you do it all in a dress you found stuffed on the back of the rack in your thrift store
that fit you perfectly from the very beginning.
Don't you?
xx,

so. bright.
My neighbors roses have bloomed,
and so I'm once again exploiting their gardening talents for the sake of my photos.
They don't actually know this so let's keep it between you, me, and the internet, okay?
It's actually too hot already for this outfit,
which is depressing.
Dear Sun,
calm down.
However, it is never too hot for these shoes, which are my absolutely favorites.
Look mum, I can run in them!
I also wanted to apologize for my lack of regular posting,
I am discovering that writing decent posts
and graduating a year early from highschool
