real (life) talk

guess who's back. back again.

I'm literally always short of breath these days because I'm doing too much and there's no time for anything important (hello, first blog post in ages) and I've been forced to start SPEED WALKING places. I mean, obviously not actually running, but swift is the word, sharp is the motion. (And last name hahahahaahha). I realized you all probably thought I'd died, and that is not, no matter how it feels, the case. Here are a few things that are happening:

 * I just came off a weeklong NPR Next Gen Radio internship, where I learned that Ira Glass has been feeding me honey-voiced lies this whole time, because he makes it sound easy and it is NOT.

* I am seeing Chance the Rapper on Sunday, Kanye next month, and then I can die happy, because my holy trinity of music (Gambino, Chance, and Kanye) will have been witnessed.

* I discovered a new starbucks drink: venti-vanilla-bean-frappuchino-with-three-pumps-of-toffee-nut-syrup. You're welcome.

*I've decided I want to go to D.C. for spring break. Someone tell me what I need to eat.

*I'm trying to learn how to use Photoshop, because I've been using VSCO which is not ~professional~.

*People have started wearing Uggs again and it makes me want to cry.

* I'm going to be Eleven from Stranger Things for Halloween, I've got the calculator watch and all.

* I have SO MANY IDEAS FOR BLOG POSTS and no sunlight to shoot them in. I'll keep you updated.

Today I saw a girl talking to a pumpkin spice latte in the library about her midterms,
and I related far more than I am comfortable with.

go to camp

all photos taken with fujifilm x30

I realized today that every year around this time I disappear for a week, but don't really talk about why beyond saying "I'm going to camp". I've been saying that for eight of the last ten years I've been in 4-H, and I decided that this was the year in which I share with you all why it's so special for me.

Four years ago, after occurring every summer for decades, my camp did not exist. Three years ago, we endured a stomach virus, rain, loss of electricity, and over three quarters of our staff, campers, and adult volunteers falling ill. Two year ago, we barely made the minimum attendance for campers. This year, Sacramento County 4-H Resident Camp had a full staff, a waitlist of kids wanting to attend, sunshine every day, and I was Camp Director.

When you’re a kid, like I was (a long time ago), getting off the bus at camp, it’s all fun. You make icebox candles, play in the lake, and throw water balloons at your group leaders. You lie in the crunchy grass next to your new best friend and look at the stars you can’t see from your home in the city.  When you’re a staffer, getting out of your car two days before the campers arrive, you can already feel the fun and sunburn setting in. When we unload the hundreds of pounds of food we need, you hear the clamor of two hundred happy people sharing a delicious meal. You shove your co-leaders into the not-quite-swept-out corner of the cabin with the spiders. You sleep deep that night, knowing you won’t again for a while, not without at least five little hands shaking you awake for a bathroom run.

At the start of the week, you don't know the kids those hands are attached to. Some are 4-Hers, some aren’t (yet). They come from different neighborhoods, different socioeconomic backrounds, and vastly different lives. Camp is a special place where all these kids come together and learn a lot about life without even realizing it. Through our programming, we teach them not just arts and crafts, but about healthy relationships, self reliance, and the importance of engaging with your community. We also instill a sense of pride in their program, which is seen when the camper becomes the staffer. I’ve been attending camp since I was 10 years old, and have served on staff since I was 15.

There’s a reason camp is special, and it’s different for everyone. For me, a city girl who is severely allergic to mosquitoes and doesn’t like to go camping, camp is a family formed in a program I love. Camp is starting committee meetings in December, and spending hours interviewing staff to add to that family. Camp is having serious discussions with nine year olds about the importance of the bedtime stories we tell at the end of the day. Camp is knowing that every morning, for one week, I am given the privilege to shape a childs life. Over the years, that has shaped me as person.

I consider  4-H Resident Camp my project of excellence, aka the best thing I've done as a 4-H'er because it hasn’t just changed me - it’s changing a child, a community, and itself, every summer.

It's also drastically changing my skin, because hundreds of bug bites over the years have left me looking rough man

backpack backpack

backpack c.o. sunny dushanka
shirt: vintage ralph lauren// short: vintage levis//shoes: keds via teen vogue

It is the strange power of Dora the Explorer that I have only seen one episode in my entire existence and yet know every word of the backpack song

This is just a cheeky little post to show off my snazzy Sunny Dushanka backpack
and to shamelessly promote the video I made to prove
(watch in 720hd for best hair definition)

I truly adore this backpack though.
It's a gorgeous color,
all leather (sturdy), handmade in Greece (sturdy)
and all the buckles are real metal buckles (sturdy).
Overall, it's perfect Justina gear
aka it's in it for the long haul

Lately, rucksacks have been calling me.
Between all the travel, long days, and even longer nights,
I need a bag that holds more than lipstick and half a stick of gum, ya feel?

 Speaking of long nights:
winter is coming.

I'm having serious GoT withdrawels.

But seriously, my two favorite seasons are on their way,
and with them come some very great things:

my first days of college (!!!)
my birthday
apple picking
my birthday
sweaters
my birthday
all the best holidays
like my birthday
pumpkin spice errythang

Oh and it's my birthday in a few weeks!

 Until then though,
I have all sorts of good stuff lined up.

Lets just say this backpack
won't be going into retirement anytime soon.

xx

 ps.
I am livetweeting the Emmy's on Monday,
and you should be there.

(a little over) 24 hours in New York City

Ever wonder what it's like to go to NYC for 24 hours?

Me neither.

But it happened anyway and was completely and incredibly amazing.
Looking at you Clifford.

I got to meet some of my favorite people,
eat the worlds best ruben sandwich,
and watch Parks and Rec on a plane.

I can't decide which part was the best,
so watch the video and let me know.

xx,
Justina

ps.
shoutout to our driver Carlos,
who looked like an extra from The Godfather.

a bent piece of wire in the big apple

it's time to be off

I was about to pack up and leave for NYC without even a post.
I know, bad blogger, but can you blame me?

It's been a flawlessly insane week.

 I saw Miley.
 I SAW MILEY.

 She was perfect

It has been worth the almost decade long wait I've endured
since I first fell in love with her on New Years Eve 2005.
If you get the chance,
snatch your Hannah Montana gear out of your closet
I know you still have it
and get your butt to the Bangerz Tour.

But pressing on, I'M GOING TO NEW YORK CITY.
 How excited are we?
Much.
Much excited.

I'm only there for a little over 24 hours,
so obviously,
I'm going to spend half of it instagramming super-touristy things.

To follow along you can check the hashtag #ABPOWintheApple or, even better, just follow me on Instagram and twitter
Actually, that's like 500x better.
Do that.

I'm going to be on the TODAY show Friday morning,
so if you're in the US, take control of your television set and watch.
I want to make y'all proud.
And you want to see what comes out of my mouth on national television.
It's going to be good.

As I write this post,
I realize I've already forgotten to pack pants.
Which are extremely essential.

Especially if you've only packed sweaters.

xx,
Justina

 #teenvogue sweater : c.o. lulu*s|jeans: forever 21 | boots c.o b.c. footwear

It is 30 degrees outside.

that is so cold that water doesn't even want to be water anymore and turns into ice

HELLO WEATHER?
 WRONG STATE.

All black errythang.

 literally errythang

This is all the black I own.

I just need to find a new pair of tights
(I didn't MEAN to snag that last pair on my book okay)
and I can return to bringing pink to the grayest of days.

The boots will stay.
They're absolutely amazing, and also very pirate-y, which I appreciate.
Full post on the importance of black boots coming soon.

yay turkey

idk dude autumn leaves are just awesome

 Happy Thanksgiving!
(aka "Justina's favorite holiday")

If you are an American, and took a break from eating to read this,

stop it immediately.

This post will still be here,
but I cannot guarantee your food will for much longer.

If you are not American, or have already passed into the semi-comatose, internet wandering state,
carry on.

I would like to take this opportunity to express how deeply thankful I am for you guys.
I make lists a lot, and on this years "Thanksgiving Thank You's" list,
a lot of the things were rooted in the fact that you read this blog, like my instagram posts,
and come up with clever 140 character responses.

So thank you for being so exceptionally fabulous.

Now let's get back to these pies.

xx,
Justina

PS. (A)
Don't go to Walmart tomorrow.
 pps.

this is halloween, halloween, halloween

this is my pumpkin, her name is Suzy

Haaaappy Halloweeeeeeen

all jokes about taking candy from strangers aside,
I love Halloween

Costumes, awesome makeup, oh and candy

What're you dressing up as?
note: if you say "miley cyrus", you're disowned

And yes, I still trick or treat.
no shame in my game

Then I'll probably sit on my couch in a sea of Milky Way wrappers
and watch Hocus Pocus, Charlie Browns The Great Pumpkin,
and the Nightmare Before Christmas in quick succession.

there are other nights to party with friends, nights without so many amazing themed movies

And of course, the most important thing about Halloween:
There's only 54 days until Christmas!

Justina

I love this.
 A lot.

If you don't already know who Lorde is,
pull yourself out from under your rock and get a youtube on.

You playlists will be better for it.

 just fyi:

I actually will always be a royal.

idk man, I just wanted photos of my experiment in indie girl face paint.

I never really edit my photos, and therefore had no idea of all the fun stuff I could do with my editor.

stars, flashes of colored light, and general blurriness, fun fun fun

Welcome to The Photobooth

(photo taken by my snazzy new macbook that actually works this time around)

Eyeliner is bang on in this one.

Ok, you guys know what I look like.
A little too well, probably.
But I have NO idea what you look like!
This is silly, because you are a huge part of my life.
I probably spend more time talking to you than I do people I see every day.

So here's how I'm going to fix that:

Send me a photobooth selfie of yourself.
Grab your camera and go crahaaaaazy.

I wanna see you in your element.
Pull out your favorite sweater, your pinkest lipstick, or your dog.
Better yet, put the sweater and the lipstick on the dog.

Actually, no, don't do that, my dog is glaring at me.

Once you have the photo, email it to me with your name, age, where you're from, and one line about yourself. In say...a week, I'll put the best up in a post here.

Time to be internet face-mous.

That was really bad.

xx,
Justina
