reach your inner abercrombie

 photos by Katea Pirgaru

oh my GOSH Mum, I told you,
I'm soft grunge now

Over the weekend, I had a photoshoot with my lovely friend Katea,
who is insanely talented.

We shot a bunch of photos for outfit posts,
various other projects,
and the ongoing documentation of my hair refusing to fit withing the boundaries of gravity.

Some of them came out looking vaguely like one of those posters you make out through the dimness hanging on the wall of an Abercrombie store.

 Or so I've heard.

Not like I've ever gone in an Abercrombie and
stared at the posters of beautiful people on the walls or anything.

Nah.

Look for more of Katea's photos of my hair proving Sir Isaac Newton wrong
 over
and over
and over again
coming soon.

xx

in with the new // 2013 a bent piece of wire awards

L-R 2013 A Bent Piece of Wire Award Winners:
Person of The Year - Jennifer Lawrence | Blogger of the Year - Ellie, Ellies Favorite Things
Product of The Year - EOS Lipbalm | Model of the Year - Cara Delevigne | Magazine of the Year - Teen Vogue

goodbye, farewell, aufwiedersehn, adieu

you you, and you, and..
oh no, I'll be seeing you.

This is it.
The last day of  possibly the most magical year of my existence to date.
We capped most of it back in November, but even just since then,
 more important things have happened,
like this article I wrote for Teen Vogue on being homeschooled,
and being interviewed for Fashionista.com for this post on teen retailers.
It's been a crazy beautiful whirlwind and 2014 doesn't look like it intends on even LOOKING at the brakes.

Slow down? nahhhhh

You guys got yourself a seatbelt and a snack and got on for the ride,
and I can't wait to see where we're headed.
I'll probably be the last to know.

I'm not a fan of making resolutions but I did make one I have every intention of keeping:

Resolution the first (and only):   Do it with a bang.

If I'm going to do it, I'm going to do it 500%.
 And possibly an actual bang.
Sometimes the goal is simply to make as much noise as possible.

So round up all your envelope skorts, "Blurred Lines" paraphanalia, and photos of Kanye West,
and put them in a time capsule.
preferably buried in the back yard underneath several inches of concrete
We're headed for a new trend.

See you in the next year, don't be late.

xx,
Justina

I am model, hear my voice

When I was a little girl, I wanted to be a model.

It had very little to do with me actually knowing anything about modelling,
and more with me wanting to be Tyra Banks.

The older I got, the more this want increased.
I was a short twelve year old with wonky teeth, and insane hair, but I was on a mission.
I submitted to agencies, made videos, entered contests.  None ever went where I wanted.
It got to the point where my dad and I were doing those scouting cattle calls for fun,
just to see if I'd get "scouted" or not. I nearly always did, because I looked different,
and that was the lucky number.

But then, I started fashion blogging.

I very quickly got very educated on the modeling industry behind the curtains, past the jet-set lifestyle. Or maybe I learned what it really meant. I saw the news reports on the eating disorders, witnessed behind-the behind the scenes footage at runway shows, where models dash in only to be fully stripped and shoved around, less like people and more like paper dolls. Can you imagine being told after a year that you are not the .01% of models that become a supermodel, that there is someone younger than you, who isn't jet -lagged, who has better hair, more interesting teeth?
I saw the models that felt like they couldn't handle it any more. They couldn't handle anything.

I didn't want to be a model anymore.

I wanted to be the boss.

Please understand : This is not me saying that it is a dark place that you should never visit.

You might be the next Karlie, and I would hate for you not to make the jump. You could be Cara, the next It Girl. The fashion world could be at your feet with a swish of your hair. You might be the model that gets to keep the Valentino dress you shot for Vogue.  If it's what you want, go for it.
Just make sure it's not who you become.
You are an awesome person who can do whatever you want.

Model, and learn to speak Dutch. Shoot editorials, and study anthropology.
Come out the other end with a contentment, not a "what if".

I have a close friend who is a model and is happy with her choices. It is what shes does, much like blogging is what I do. I love reading about her adventures, and follow them religiously. She follows mine much the same. We are content in our places in this strange little universe that operates out of suitcases and closets, each an essential part of keeping it ticking.

This TED talk really got to me, deeper than any I had heard before, because here was a model telling people to their faces something I've tried to educate people one since day one (or maybe three)
Nobody looks like the models in the magazines, not even the model herself.

People who are not in this industry don't often understand that.
They see the "PHOTOSHOP EXPOSE" that crops up on every station in America every couple years, or the before and after photos leaked of a celebrities US Weekly cover.
They know, somewhere, that it is not real.
But they don't see the immensely talented makeup artists, and the ten pounds of extensions.
The stylist that can make you look ten pounds lighter or thirty heavier with the tweak of a belt.
It's photoshopped before the camera flashes.

I love it.

(didn't see that coming, did you?)

I acknowledge it's fakeness and take it in all it's glory. It's a magic of sorts.
But it's our job, as members of both the fashion community and people who are just generally decent human beings, to have people remember the beautiful collections,
AND know the name of the girl wearing the dress.
Being a model is not all she is and all she will ever be.

No, she is not #RussianModelNumber34, her name is Anastacia, and she is going to be a journalist.

It's not hard. Unless you're bad with names.

Whew. I have wanted to write this post for a while, I think.
I apologize if the thread get's a bit tangled, (or completely and utterly lost) but you get me.

And if you are the one who is bad with names, try remembering faces.

Mine's the one making weird expressions.

xx,
Justina

So Justina Went To The Beach (sort of)

So..who wants to know where I went?

You do.
guess.

guess again

ok.

I can’t handle this kind of stress

I WENT TO LOS ANGELES TO SHOOT AT SMASHBOX STUDIOS FOR DISNEY CHANNEL’S "TEEN BEACH MOVIE" AND IT WAS PERFECT

whew

Do you even know how hard it is to keep a secret from y’all?
 Especially a secret like that.

I am getting the feeling that you have a lot of questions.

Let me provide you will some general thoughts and answers:

1.You only think you're good at doing your makeup until someone who is actually good at doing makeup does it for you.
2. Having a nice car is good, but being driven around in a nice car is better.
3. Yes, Garret Clayton’s teeth are really that white.
4. Australian accents are really lovely.
5. False lashes are one of the best things ever invented.
6. Sometimes, (always) a lot of bling is a good thing.
7. I'll never get used to having this many people touch my hair at once.
8. Teen Beach Movie songs will never leave your mind.
9. There are a lot of people on shoots you will never see, but who are incredibly important.
10. "Hairspray! Safety pins! Hollywooooooood tape!"

I met some really cool people, and I want to talk about them:

Elisabeth:  She who is in charge of keeping us on track and does a gorgeous job of it. Elisabeth was in charge of all the little details of my trip, and she is so lovely. Everybody clap for Elisabeth.

Kelly: My makeup artist and hair tamer. She completely shamed me in the eyeliner department. Clap for her too.

Chelsea: The first stylist I’ve ever met who completely understand my visual visions, and the power of bling. We'll just clap for them all while we're at it.

Garret + Maia: The first movie stars I’ve ever met, who were both exceedingly charming and fun, and had really good playlists.

EVERYONE ON SET:
Dedicated to the Disney magic, and being nice to me, which was absolutely wonderful of them.

I don’t know about you, but my Disney Channel experience is of the High School Musical/Hannah Montana/Kim Possible generation. I’m used to the song and dance, so to speak. Teen Beach Movie is about a flashback, and is a flashback. If you don’t already know the plot, it’s about two teenage  surfer romantics, who, trying to catch the last monster wave in the name of summer, youth, and all that good stuff, get zapped into their favorite 1960’s..er..teen beach movie, Wet Side Story.

It’s all beachy from there, right?

WRONG.

But I’m telling you no more.

Go watch the trailer.

Better yet, on July 19th, at 8, on..come on, you know which channel, watch the movie.

There’s a really strong fashion element to the film. It’s sort of a fifth lead character, defining the different groups and the time period.

You’ll get more on that in an upcoming post, where I prove to you that you can take Justina out of her town and put her in a studio surrounded by a ton of professionals,
but you can’t make the Justina not jump around like Justina.

                                                                                xx,
                                                                             Justina
